Home Ownership

Dear Applicant,

Habitat for Humanity Lethbridge is a non-profit housing organization. We build or acquire homes for families of all social, religious and ethnic backgrounds. Our goal is to build/acquire modest homes with a 0% mortgage for families who could not otherwise afford home ownership. Please read the following items to see if your family meets our guidelines:

1.  Your current housing does not meet your family’s needs. It may be too costly, too small or in poor condition.

2.  The primary wage earner of the family must have stable full-time employment for a minimum of 2 years (preferably with their current employer), earning a minimum of $ 50,000.00 annually.

3.  Your family has been a resident in Lethbridge or the surrounding area for at least two years.

4.  Your total household income is too low, such that you cannot buy a home and obtain bank financing in the usual way.

5.  All working members of the family must include the following:

  • The three most recent tax returns from CRA (copies, not originals)

  • Letter(s) from your employer(s) detailing hours worked, current wage and that your employment is permanent

  • Please note: your application will only be considered if these items are included.

6.  We reserve the right to verify the information that you provide on this application. This may mean a credit check and verification of chequing and savings account balances and contact with or a statement from your current and previous landlords.

7.  To be approved for a home, you must have children under the age of 18, living full-time in the house.

 8.  If approved for a Habitat home, you must provide references and contact information from three people who know you and your situation.

  • One must be your employer

  • the others must be two of the following:

    • a member of the clergy

    • a teacher, a social worker

    • a healthcare professional

    • or another professional

9.  If approved for a Habitat home, you must complete a total of 500 hours of sweat equity, at least half of which would be completed on the build or renovation. Other hours can be logged by volunteering for charitable community organizations. Some restrictions may apply.

 10.  If you are approved for a home, your mortgage payments will be approximately 30% of your monthly income. You are required to make these payments on time each month.

11.  HFHL does not build/acquire houses for extended family. We build/acquire homes for nuclear families only (that is, parents and their children).

12.  Submitted applications must be fully complete to be considered.

The Family Selection Committee will review each application and determine whether candidates are in need of better housing, that they are willing to partner with us and that they have the financial ability to pay for a mortgage. All information collected will be used only for family selection purposes. If your family is not chosen, all financial information, including tax returns, will be destroyed.
